Open-source platform for creating and running a website

WordPress is a free and open source publishing platform for websites.  It is said that over 25% of the world's websites run on WordPress. It comes in two flavors: the fully hosted WordPress.com, and the self-hosted version, whose software is available for free at WordPress.org.

This is the simplest option. It lets you focus on your content while the hosting, security and backups are taken care of. However, it does have a price.

It will get your hands dirty as you'll be hosting your website yourself and installing "plugin" to add additional functionalities.

Here's a more advanced comparison of WordPress.com vs WordPress.org.

WordPress.org is free.

WordPress.com has a free plan with a wordpress.com subdomain and ads.

WordPress.com paid plans start at $3.99/month billed yearly, for a site with you custom domain name and no ads.
